In some States, schools have been closed Blinding fog lifts NEW DELHI: Cold wave, which had pummelled north India since the advent of New Year, eased marginally in the plains where mercury inched upwards at many places on Monday even as 18 more people died of the chill. The death toll in the region has risen to 65. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, however, shivered as fresh snowfall in higher and mid-hills, coupled with rains in lower reaches, aggravated cold wave conditions. Fog, which blinded the region for the past week playing havoc with road, rail and air traffic, descended at a few places early in the morning only to vanish as the day advanced. All 18 fresh fatalities occurred in Uttar Pradesh, where the mercury rose in industrial city of Kanpur, State capital Lucknow and several other places. Night and day temperatures also moved up in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, which reeled under intense cold. Plummeting temperatures forced authorities in some States to shut schools and order bonfires at public places to beat the chill. — PTI
