KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) that demands separate union territory status for Karaikal region in the Union Territory of Puducherry, undertook a week-long ‘padayatra’ from December 25 to 31 in the six Communes of Karaikal district covering a distance of 150 km to create awareness among the electorate to vote for the political alliance that assured to confer Union Territory (UT) status for Karaikal region in its manifesto in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. S. P. Selvashanmugham, a lawyer, and also convenor of KSG, told media persons here on Friday that the ‘padayatra’ inaugurated by R. Ramaseenivasan, veteran freedom fighter and one of the founder members of the KSG met nearly one lakh voters and briefed them about the need for a separate union territory status for Karaikal region. The yatra was concluded by O. R. Thirunavukkarasu, another founder member of the KSG on Wednesday evening. He pointed out that more than 50 members of KSG including including Pavalar A. Packirisamy, retired professors Madana Marimuthu and Raja Elakkuvanar, retired headmasters, T. Ramalinga Reddiar and T. Thirugnanasambandam, G.K. Narayanasamy, former president of chamber of commerce and others took part in the padayatra. Deciding factorMr. Selvashanmugham said that the voters in Karaikal region were the deciding factor for the victory of Puducherry Lok Sabha seat that comprised 4 enclaves with a total of nearly 7.36 lakh voters. He claimed that the voters had been told to vote for the political party that assured in its manifesto for providing union territory status for Karaikal region.
