Mimicry, the much anticipated event of the 49th Kerala School Kalotsavam, was played out before a packed audience at the Putharikkandam grounds, the main venue of the festival, on Monday, the final day of the week-long extravaganza. However, despite high expectations, the event lacked originality and innovativeness. Predictably, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy were the favourite pick of most of the contestants, with a few of them meticulously mimicking their mannerisms, gestures and conversational styles. But, unlike most of the mimicry events which hinged on the imitation of film stars and their mannerisms, the event held here on Monday had only a few participants going for the cine stars. In the end, of the 15 participants who took part in the competition for Higher Secondary Students, only six managed to secure the coveted ‘A grade,’ an aberration in the weeklong festival that saw a windfall ‘A grades.’ Sangeeth Kurian
