Mattuthavani bus stand in a sorry state

Conditions at the Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus are worse. The credit goes to Madurai Corporation. It is a great wonder that ISO: 9001 certificate has been awarded to this pitiable bus stand. A newcomer to Madurai will wonder whether it is a bus stand or super bazaar because 90 per cent of the space is occupied by shopkeepers and vendors. Food, prepared in unhygienic conditions at the stalls here, are sold at exorbitant rates and beyond the reach of common man. While the Corporation is much interested in collecting monthly rent from the shopkeepers, passengers are in a helpless condition to convey their sufferings. The district administration is taking little care to maintain this important bus stand. To save the image of Madurai, the Corporation must take remedial measures for a better maintenance of the bus stand.

Cracks on rails

This is with reference to a letter that appeared on December 30. It is true that adequate gang men have not been posted. Besides, the permanent way inspector, who travels on the tracks on a motor trolley, must periodically check the lines and find out the reasons for such cracks. If it is a case of sabotage, it must be reported to the higher authorities and RPF personnel, along with gang men, must caution the nearest railway station to avoid accidents. Local people’s help may also be sought.Another important aspect is that importance must be attached to the quality of rails. While replacing, good quality rails must be laid to withstand the heavy load of the trains.

These measures must be taken earnestly in the interest of travelling public since their safety is more important. Hope the railway authorities look into this.

Mini barricades

The two mini barricades erected on the busy New Natham road opposite the police officers’ quarters appear to be an unnecessary measure to control the vehicular traffic. Being a highway, it results in a traffic snarl during peak hours . At night, the barricades become a veritable trap due to poor visibility caused by high-beam lights from powerful halogen lamps of oncoming vehicles. If the authorities want to control the speed of vehicles, they can instead erect speed breakers, which will not hinder the smooth movement of traffic on either sides. I appeal to the authorities to remove the mini barricades forthwith.

Unsafe road to P and T Nagar

The stretch of main road going towards P and T Nagar from Viswanathapuram junction is in a pitiable condition. There is no tar topping on a majority of this stretch. One side of the road has been rendered unusable due to mounds of excavated soil for a civic work making the ride bumpy and dangerous. These parts of the city, thickly populated with so many houses, apartments and schools, witnesses heavy traffic, leading to traffic congestion because of the poor state of this stretch. The bad condition of the road causes repairs to two-wheelers, cars and other vehicles. The problem gets worse at night and during rainy season. The public had been put to great difficulty for a very long time, with no action whatsoever having been taken by the authorities.

It high time some positive action is taken by the Corporation authorities to restore the road to a normal, usable and safe condition. Their prompt action in this regard will bring a great relief to the public of this area and will be very much appreciated by all.
