Doll house: Puppets on display at the handicrafts and handloom expo in Thiruvananthapuram. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ongoing handicrafts and handloom exhibition-cum-sale of the Gujarat Emporium at the Jawahar Bal Bhavan has showcased products from nine States. The expo is offering a rebate of 20 per cent on handloom products and 10 percent on handicrafts. Dresses, gift items, cloth, leather bags, purses, gloves, puppets made of cloth and wood, Rajasthani jewellery made of precious and semi-precious stones, idols of gods and goddesses, bed sheets and door mats are among the items on display. Bringing luckFeng Shui articles, believed to fetch good luck have been put up as special display items, a press note issued here said. The pieces of jewellery up for sale include ornaments fashioned out of white metal, chains, studs and lockets from Jaipur and Gujarati bangles made of Australian diamonds and gold-covered ornaments sporting emeralds and Italian coral. Lovers of ethnic dresses can stop by the section selling traditional Gujarati block, bathic, Kutch and bandhini wear. Also on display are gagra-cholis, tie and dye salwars and Jaipuri chanya-cholis for kids. Some ‘specials’The expo also sports specialised items such as chanapatna toys, pooja material, acupressure equipment and terracotta products from Kolkata, Gorakhpur and Gujarat. This expo, said the press note, is being organised under a development scheme of the Government of India designed to improve the livelihood of craftsmen and handloom weavers and to avoid middlemen in the sale of their products. The expo also aims at promoting the participation of National Award-winning artisans and craftsmen. All the products at the expo are being sold by the artisans themselves at reduced prices.
