Call to shun path of violence

ADILABAD: The Chairman of the high power committee on Rural and Interior Areas Development (RIAD) programme T. Purushothama Rao on Tuesday said that there has been a focussed development of rural areas through the RIAD.

He said that the Congress government should be appreciated for the efforts it made to initiate talks with the naxalites since assuming power in 2004.

Setting example

The government had set an example by bringing the extremists to the table for discussions and according them special treatment.

At a review meeting he held with officials on the progress under RIAD, Mr. Rao traced the events leading to the government launching the RIAD programme. He said following the talks with naxals, the government had wished to bring the spirit of Gandhism in its villages.

The government does not want people to choose the path of violence. Hence it launched this programme for all round development of villages in tribal areas, he pointed out. The Chairman urged officials to work sincerely in improving the conditions in rural area to avoid the crisis caused by ill spent money. Later Mr. Purushotham Rao addressed party workers where he reminded them of the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.
