Coastal farmers seek their due

Correspondent

Bhimavaram: Farmers of costal districts will boycott the ensuing elections if the State government does not concede their genuine demand of providing irrigation water to tail-end areas, former MP and State leader of the Rythu Karyacharana Samiti Mente Padmanabham has said.

Rythu sadassu

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, Mr. Padmanabham said that a ‘mega rythu sadassu’ would be organised by the samiti at Eluru on January 27 to express their dissent against the attitude of the government. “The Congress Government in the State is shedding crocodile tears on the plight of Delta farmers,” he alleged.

He alleged that due to sheer negligence of officials concerned, nearly 5,50,000 acres of agricultural lands and nearly 1,50,000 acres of fisiculture were suffering losses.

Dig at Ponnala

He sought immediate steps to get irrigation water from the Godavari to tail-end areas of Delta region to get bumper paddy yield. He said the government miserably failed in providing MSP of Rs.1,450 for paddy. He alleged that Minister for Major Irrigation Ponnala Lakshmaiah was taking care to supply water to the Devadula irrigation project, ignoring the needs of farmers of tail-end areas in costal districts.

He said that farmers of costal districts would intensify their stir by organising rallies, rasta-rokos till the government conceded their demands.

The farmers of costal districts were also against formation of Telangana, Mr. Padmanabham said.
