Finds fault with quality of staircases in dwellings at Pillaichavadi VILLUPURAM: Collector R. Palanisamy has told contractors that they should construct permanent houses for the tsunami-affected within the stipulated time without compromising on quality. He made a surprise visit to the affected coastal areas such as Pillaichavadi, Keezhputhupattu, Boommiyarpalayam and Periya Mudaliyar Chavadi on Tuesday. At Pillaichavadi, he expressed his reservation about the quality of the staircases put up in the 107 permanent houses being built at the cost of Rs 2.55 crore. He directed the contractors to rectify the lapses and provide strong and sturdy structures to the beneficiaries. At Bommiyarpalayam, he found time lapse in erecting the roofs for 253 units coming up at the cost of Rs. 60 crore. Mr. Palanisamy said that the roofing works should be completed within a fortnight and by month-end, the houses should be ready for occupation. At Periyamudaliyar Chavadi, he found encroachments on seven sites allotted for permanent houses. He ordered their eviction and speedy completion of the project. At Keezhputhupattu where a dozen tenements were built by demolishing dilapidated structures, Mr. Palanisamy ordered the officials to lay cement roads. Deputy Collector (Tsunami) M. Kandasamy and Special Tahsildar (Tsunami) Renganathan accompanied him.
