Bangalore: Contrary to the general opinion that non-literary Kannada books do not sell, a book titled “Kannada, Kannadiga, Karnataka” containing interesting information has seen its sixth edition. The first two editions were brought out by the now defunct Kannada Shakti Kendra in 1990 and 1996. While the Chikkodi-based Allama Prabhu Siddhi Samsthana published the third edition in 1999, the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) brought out the two subsequent editions. The sixth edition has been published by Sapna Book House. The book is basically a compilation of a range of well-researched articles on various subjects. Many people such as historian Suryanath Kamath, writers P.V. Narayana, H. M. Marulasiddaiah and M. Chidananda Murthy, Kannada activist Ra. Nam. Chandrashekhar and the former Minister H. K. Patil have contributed articles. The book has been edited by L.S. Seshagiri Rao, Dr. Chidananda Murthy and Mr. Ra. Nam. Chandrashekhar. The first 35 pages of the book recall the spirit of Kannada culture as reflected in the poems of Kuvempu, Ti. Nam. Srikantaiah, Pu. Ti. Na., Huyilugola Narayana Rao, Saali Ramachandraraya, M. Govinda Pai, Da. Ra. Bendre and Gopalakrishna Adiga. Then, it traces the history, development and the related issues of the State right from Halmidi inscriptions to the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee report. The rest of the book has been reserved to a range of issues that are culturally and politically serious in nature. Priced at Rs. 120, the book also provides general information such as names of Governors, names of places and persons on whom postal stamps have been brought out, ports, waterfalls, national parks and tourist spots.
