Thiruvananthapuram
Many consider the diary timely, appropriate and inspiring.
Thiruvananthapuram: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.’s telephone, which has been ringing almost non-stop during 2008 because of its novel plans covering all sections of society from the student to the pensioner, has started ringing again. This time, it is over the diary for 2009 brought out by the public sector telecommunication giant, which many consider timely, appropriate and inspiring. The diary instils patriotism and nationalist pride at a time when the country is facing extremism and terrorism. It opens with the picture of a young couple fondling their child with the message “Listen to the voice of the future” and then pans quickly to the past with the words “Voices of India.” The subsequent pages carry the pictures and well-known sayings of 12 persons who had influenced the destiny of the country. Picture galleryThe picture gallery opens with Mahatma Gandhi and ends with the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The others who adorn it are Jawaharlal Nehru, Mother Teresa, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sardar Patel, Rajendra Prasad, Sarojini Naidu, B.R. Ambedkar, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda. The BSNL has been one of the few exceptions in the public sector, competing with private companies. The melas launched by it have become the envy of even the private sector.
