Rabi crop to get water from Yeleru in full quantity

Staff Reporter

Collector addresses a meeting of WUAs, officials

Panel to be constituted for surplus water utilisation

Kakinada: Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi has said the Rabi crop under the Yeleru reservoir would be supplied water in full quantity allotted for the season. The reservoir has at present 8.71 thousand million cubic feet (TMCFT) of water while the demand for three months (January-March) is 7 TMCFT, including 1 TMCFT, for Pithapuram Branch Canal (PBC) which has been necessitated by the steep decline in supplies to PBC from Samalkot canal. This is because of the fall in inflows in the river Godavari. In all, water will be drawn from Yeleru reservoir for 53,000 acres of Rabi crops.

Ryots’ requirement

Addressing a meeting of the Water Users’ Associations and officials of Irrigation and Revenue Departments here, Mr. Dwivedi said a six-member committee, comprising three farmers each of Yeleru reservoir and PBC, would be constituted to plan the utilisation of 1.71 TMCFT of surplus water in the Yeleru reservoir. The Irrigation Department officials have to meet farmers’ requirements as per the recommendations of the above committee.

The Collector said that the personnel of the Irrigation Department would be posted to keep a watch on the Yeleru reservoir and canal systems to ensure that water was not impounded illegally by farmers of other places.

Steps would be taken to remove the massive accumulations of water hyacinth to facilitate free flow of water to the tail-end areas. Modernisation of the Yeleru system would commence in the coming summer.
