This Day That Age
Dr. Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban revolution, on January 5 proclaimed martial law throughout Havana province shortly before his President-designate, Dr. Manuel Urrutia, was due to arrive in Havana. No reason was given for the order, announced by the revolutionary chief of Army Headquarters, Commander Camilio Cienfuego Cienfuegos. Hundreds of thousands of people crowded the airport and streets leading to the presidential palace waiting for Dr. Urrutia’s arrival. Earlier, the revolutionary militia began a round up of people connected with the former Batista Government and 300 army offices were detained. The city of Havana began returning to normal with grocery shops reopening and newspapers reappearing.
