News Analysis
>>The ninth paragraph of a report “Omar sworn in J&K Chief Minister” (January 6, 2009) said that among those present on the occasion was the PCC chief and former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. The PCC Chief of Jammu & Kashmir is Union Minister Saifuddin Soz. >>A sentence in the ninth paragraph of a report “Terrorism: are stronger laws the answer?” (Editorial page, January 1, 2009) was “It [India] is among the few countries that have not signed the United Nations convention on torture”, leading to a query. Prashant Bhushan clarifies: “I have again checked the website of the UN High Commissioner of Human rights which provides the list of countries which have signed and/or ratified the UN Convention against Torture. This has been updated till December 17, 2008. It says that India has signed but not ratified the convention. In the absence of ratification, India is not bound by it. Therefore the statement in my article should have been ‘India is one of the few countries which has not ratified the UN Convention against torture.’ It does not change the substance of what I have said in the article.” >>The eighth paragraph of a report “‘Register case against Stalin’” (January 6, 2009, page 1) had a reference to the “Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 196”. It should have been the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, as mentioned in the fifth paragraph. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
