JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has asked the State Energy Department to take steps for supplying sufficient electricity to farmers to enable them to arrange for irrigation of their crops. He said the public sector power companies would devise an action plan for supplying power to agricultural consumers for eight hours in a day. High-level meetingAddressing a high-level meeting of the Energy Department here over the weekend, Mr. Gehlot said his government would fulfil the promises made for the power sector in the Congress party’s election manifesto. “For this,” he added, “affirmative steps are needed to strengthen the power infrastructure across the State.” Mr. Gehlot said the State Government would provide adequate financial assistance to power companies for purchasing electricity to be supplied to farmers during the crop seasons. He said the new action plans to achieve the targets would try to evolve an atmosphere conducive to an efficient power supply. While appraising the ongoing power projects, Mr. Gehlot said all of them would be completed on schedule. The meeting was apprised of the energy needs of the State during the next four years, the power scenario during the rabi crop of 2008-09, and power consumption figures of agricultural consumers. DiscomsState Chief Secretary D.C. Samant, Principal Finance Secretary C.K. Mathew and senior officers of the Jaipur, Ajmer and Jodhpur power discoms attended the meeting.
