Reliance Communications rolls out GSM service in Tamil Nadu

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Telecom service provider Reliance Communications on Tuesday rolled out its GSM service in Tamil Nadu.

Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Salem, Vellore, Madurai, Erode and Thanjavur are the towns, besides the Union Territory of Puducherry, where the service was launched. It would be available in other areas, including Chennai, in a few days, according to the company.

“The service will be available in over 1,500 towns in the State,” V.G. Somasekhar, Regional Head, Reliance Communications (Tamil Nadu and Kerala Circles) told reporters.

The company, which got the spectrum in January 2008, had created a GSM network in Tamil Nadu, focussed on ensuring better coverage in rural areas, and superior capabilities.

More than 55 per cent of the towers set up for the network had been erected in the rural areas, he said.

The company also launched a customer experience programme for customers choosing GSM services. Mobile customers in Tamil Nadu at a one-time subscription charge of Rs. 25 could get a Reliance Mobile GSM SIM, the company said.

The features of the programme include full talk time on first recharge of Rs. 25 and free night calling (11 p.m. to 6 a.m.).

He said that the company had set up adequate number of towers across Tamil Nadu to provide high quality and congestion-free GSM services.
