First innings lead helps Salem enter semifinals

Coimbatore: A crucial 16-run first innings lead helped Salem upset the calculations of host Coimbatore and enter the semifinals of the TNCA under-16 inter-district cricket tournament here on Tuesday.

Overnight 91 for three, the visitor, thanks to Vikram Guru’s fighting 67, got past the host’s score with relative ease.

Aushik Srinivas (four for 51) and Hari Prasad (four for 33) bowled with a lot of fire for Coimbatore but could not prevent Salem from taking the lead.

The scores (quarterfinal): Coimbatore 208 & 153 for seven decl. in 21 overs (Dheer Bhimani 61) vs. Salem 224 (Vikram Guru 67, Arun Balaji 39, Vasudevan 37, Aushik Srinivas four for 51, Hari Prasad four for 33) & 88 for five in 29 overs (Aushik Srinivas five for 22). (Salem qualifies by virtue of first innings lead).

At Chennai: Theni 66 and 166 for eight in 40 overs (R. Anantharaman 61, B. Arun Kannan 33, Siddanth Ekalavya five for 34) lost to Tiruvallur 117 and 119 for four in 37.2 overs (Siddanth Ekalavya 63).

Loyola in final

Loyola College (Chennai) edged out favourite and host PSG College of Arts and Science 3-1 via tiebreaker and entered the final of the 18th State-level collegiate football tournament for the PSG Trophy here on Tuesday. The teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time.

The results (semifinals): Loyola (Chennai) 3 (Chacha, Vinod Gandhi, Dilip) bt PSG CAS 1 (Jamal Mohd.).

Quarterfinals: Loyola 3 (Chacha 17, 21, 52) bt Bharathiar University Depts. 0; St. Joseph’s (Tiruchi) 2 (Sathish 37, Shankar 47) bt CIT 1 (Ajay 54). — Sports Reporter
