Fishermen observe fast

PUDUCHERRY: Several fishermen went on a hunger strike on Wednesday demanding grant for construction of houses.

According to a release, the Puducherry Fishing People Kazhagam said that the government had not constructed houses for tsunami-affected families at Vambakeerapalayam for four years now.

The government had earlier announced a grant of Rs.2.30 lakh for construction of houses for nearly 1,500 families in the area but no steps had been taken so far, the release said.

The association demanded a grant of Rs.5.30 lakh for construction of houses, the release added. — Staff Reporter
