Scheme announced

PANAJI: The Goa Government has announced a scheme under which physiotherapy equipment will be procured for persons with disabilities by next month.

Minister for Social Welfare Ramkrishna Dhavlikar announced the scheme at the bi-centenary birth anniversary celebrations of Louis Braille organised by State Directorate of Social Welfare in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind on Monday.

Mr. Dhavlikar said that all the 14 institutions for special-needs children in the State would get school bus facility with a driver and attendant.

The maintenance expenses will be borne by the State. Louis Braille was the pioneer involved in the development of Braille script which gave a new lease of life by opening up education for the visually disabled persons.

The awards for disabled persons were presented to Jairam Pagi (pigmy collector), Pooja Girish Wadikar, (clerk), Manohar Kashinath Pednekar (assistant teacher) while awards to persons working for the cause of persons with disabilities were presented to Victor Vaz (coach, special Olympics), Dhanashree Dharmanand Zambaulikar (promotion of literature for disabled), Sr. Monica Coelho (best technical innovation for persons with disabilities), Leena Prabhu (teacher for blind persons), Kesav Seva Sadhana’s Narayan Zantye’s School for Special Children (best institution for special children).
