Himachal hikes housing subsidy for socially backward classes

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Government has increased the existing housing subsidy for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward classes from Rs 27,500 to Rs 38,500.

The subsidy for repair and upgradation of the houses has also been enhanced from Rs 12,500 to Rs 15,000, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Sarveen Chaudhary said here on Wednesday.

Listing the development projects undertaken by the Prem Kumar Dhumal Government in the hill State, she said that in the past one year, Rs 2.7 crore financial assistance had been provided to around 511 families belonging to the SC and Rs 55.45 lakh to ST families under the Self Employment Scheme.

Ms. Chaudhary, in a statement, said Rs 31.92 lakh financial assistance was also provided to 118 SC families under the Ambedkar small credit scheme while beneficiaries from both the communities also got Rs 15.79 lakh under the Him Swawalamban scheme.

Stating that the BJP government in the State was committed to the welfare of the poor, she said education loan worth Rs 6.85 lakh was provided to 14 SC and ST beneficiaries during this period while 33 SC youths were given training under the Scheduled Caste Vocational Training Scheme, the statement added.

Ms. Chaudhary said the size of SC sub plan has been increased to Rs 594 crore as compared to Rs 231 crore earmarked during the previous year. – PTI
