PUDUCHERRY: To avoid any shortage of vegetables owing to the strike called by truck owners, the Civil Supplies Department has sent several vehicles with escort of armed police to procure the vegetables from Andhra Pradesh and Bangalore. Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs P.Priyadarshini told The Hindu that four trucks would return to Puducherry from Bangalore after procuring the vegetables by Thursday. Two private lorries with armed escort had gone to Madhanapalli in Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh but could not procure vegetables following opposition from the agitating truck owners, she said. Hence, the government had decided to send two government vehicles escorted by armed police to Madhanapalli for the purpose. As of now there was no shortage for grocery items, however if the strike continues for a week they will have to take similar steps to procure the goods, she said. The requirement per day of Puducherry for vegetables was around 120 tonnes, according to vegetable merchants.
