PUDUCHERRY: A prisoner convicted for life in a murder case committed suicide in the Central Prison at Kalapet on Tuesday night. The deceased had been identified as Murugan (31) a resident of Ariankuppam. According to Inspector General of Police S. Vasudeva Rao, when the jail staff for morning duty conducted a roll call on Wednesday the convict was found to be missing. A search for him revealed that he was found missing in his cell. Later they found Murugan hanging near the Central Watch Tower inside the prison complex. Inquiries revealed that he had gone to the Tower on Tuesday night to make a call from the coin box installed in the area, he said. InquestThe inquest was conducted in the presence of Sub Divisional Magistrate and Police, he added. Mr. Rao said that disciplinary action is being contemplated against one principal warden and two wardens for not ensuring that the inmate was back in his cell after making the call. A report had been sought from the Chief Jail Warden on the incident, he added. The Inspector General of Police said the deceased was convicted along with one Kannan for the involvement in the murder of Thamizhvanan, a money lender.
