Loyola College is champion

Coimbatore: Loyola College (Chennai) survived a few anxious moments before defeating St. Joseph’s College (Tiruchi) 6-5 via the tie-breaker for the title in the 18th State-level collegiate football tournament for the PSG Trophy at the PSG College of Arts and Science grounds, here on Wednesday.

Sathish opened the scoring for Loyola after 33 minutes and St. Joseph’s snatched the equaliser 14 minutes later through Habib.

In the tie-breaker, Loyola made no mistake, while St. Joseph’s missed one through Saravanan.

The result: Final: Loyola 6 (Sathish 33, tie-breaker: Cha Cha, Dhilip, Zara, Merwyn, Ravichandran) bt St. Joseph’s 5 (Habib 47, tie-breaker: Ashok, Jaffer, Sathish, Habib).

Masters’ athletics

About 900 athletes from across the State will take part in the 27th State Masters athletics meet to be held at the Nehru Stadium from January 9 to 11.

Triple for Keartiman

Keartiman MHSS clinched a triple title in the 18th annual rural schools cricket tournament held for various age groups recently.

The scores: U-12: Keartiman MHSS ‘A’ 41 for one in 10 overs bt Keartiman ‘B’ 40 for seven in 10 overs. U-13: Keartiman 71 for six in 10 overs bt Dr. P.G. Viswanathan MHSS 61 for nine in 10 overs. U-15: GHSS (Pannimadai) ‘A’ 52 for six in 10 overs bt GHSS (Pannimadai) ‘B’ 41 for five in 10 overs. U-16: GHSS (Asokapuram) 48 for five in 10 overs bt GHSS (Pannimadai) 45 for eight in 10 overs. U-17: Keartiman 82 for four in 10 overs bt SRMS MHSS 62 for seven in 10 overs.

Ball badminton tournament

The district senior ball badminton championship, organised by the Coimbatore District Ball Badminton Association, will be held at the Nehru Stadium courts on January 17 and 18. For details, call 9894500700.
