PERTH: Germany put United States out of contention with a 2-1 win at the Hopman Cup here on Wednesday. Sabine Lisicki and Nicolas Kiefer edged Meghann Shaughnessy and James Blake 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in the deciding mixed doubles rubber. In women’s singles, Shaughnessy showed greatly improved form to take the first set, but couldn’t maintain the momentum and was beaten 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 by the promising Lisicki. Blake, who was seeking a third title here, then squared the tie with a hard-earned win over the plucky Kiefer 7-6(3), 6-7(7), 6-4. The American held two match points in the second set, but Kiefer managed to save both and then won the tie-break to force a decider. Blake broke in the first game of the third set and was able to protect the lead on his own serve to level the tie. However, the Germans had the final say in the mixed doubles tie-break which they won 10-7.
The results: Group ‘A’: Germany 2 bt USA 1 (Sabine Lisicki bt Meghann Shaughnessy 4-6, 6-0, 6-4; Nicolas Kiefer lost to James Blake 7-6(3), 6-7(7), 6-4; Lisicki & Kiefer bt Shaughnessy & Blake 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
