JAIPUR: The issue of a large number of para-teachers in Rajasthan still waiting for their regularisation led to heated exchanges between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP members in the Assembly on Wednesday. Both sides accused each other for the disarray in the field of education. The matter came up during question hour when BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore sought to know the number of para-teachers appointed as regular teachers since 2003 and the salary paid to them. He charged that the Congress-led Government was not serious about the welfare of individuals engaged for teaching children under the Centre’s schemes. Education Minister Bhanwarlal Meghwal said the previous BJP regime had resorted to an “intelligent ploy” by appointing para-teachers as “Prabodhaks” (sensitisers) under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Though the Centre had asked the State to appoint one lakh teachers to work for SSA, the State Government engaged 63,000 teachers. Mr. Meghwal said the State Government would appoint the remaining para-teachers as Prabodhaks by relaxing rules and pay them salaries for the teachers of third grade. He said the previous Government had issued orders for appointment of 28,060 of the 32,000 para-teachers as Prabodhaks, but all of them could not join. On Mr. Rathore’s query about the inclusion of English education in government schools as a promise in the Congress manifesto for the Assembly elections despite the arrangement having been ensured by the BJP regime, Mr. Meghwal said the scheme, introduced in 2004-05, had not been implemented in all schools. The Minister said the Government would introduce English education from the first standard in the government schools and ensure its compliance.
