IOCL staff strike delays flights at BIA

Special Correspondent

CHICKBALLAPUR: Several Mumbai-bound passengers were put to inconvenience as arrival/departure of flights was delayed at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) at Devanahalli on Thursday as refuelling of aircraft was affected in Mumbai following a strike by the staff of oil companies.

Four flights delayed

Sources in the Bangalore International Airport Limited told The Hindu that till Thursday evening four flights (arrival and departure) on the Mumbai sector were delayed between 30 minutes and three hours.

However, there were no delays on the Delhi sector.

The sources said that the ongoing strike by the employees of oil companies, including the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), had not affected the operations at the BIA.

ATF pipeline

Incidentally, the BIA is the first airport in the country to be connected by an offsite Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) pipeline. A 33-km underground Aviation Turbine Fuel pipeline had been commissioned by the airport’s fuel farm concessionaire Indian Oil Skytanking Limited (IOSL).

The pipeline runs from Devanagondhi, off Whitefield, to the airport fuel farm that has a capacity to pump over 1.56 lakh litres of Aviation Turbine Fuel per hour, the sources said.
