dated January 9, 1959: Earl Russel renews plea

The 86-year-old British philosopher Earl Betrand Russell said that “before long if there is no change in policy we shall look back to the happy comfortable days of the H-Bombs and wonder how anybody could have feared such trivial weapons.” Lord Russell made his comment in a book “Common Sense and Nuclear Warfare”, which was published in London on January 8. In the book, he takes a gloomy view of man’s prospects if statesmen continue with their present policies. “I hope, though with much doubt, that some gleams of sanity may yet shine in the minds of statesmen. But the spread of power without wisdom is utterly terrifying and I cannot much blame those whom it reduces to despair,” he writes.
