Corrections and clarifications

* * The heading of an item (“Briefly”, January 8, 2009) was “Officers’ strike hits 13 oil refineries”, which was incorrect. As the text said, officers of 13 oil PSUs are on an indefinite strike, impacting operations in four key refineries.

* * A report “Amartya, Mittal in PM’s Global Advisory Council” (January 8, 2009) said that others [among the 20 prominent persons] who have accepted the invitation to be members include “Tan Sri Dato, Ajit Singh …”, adding up to 21. It should have been Tan Sri Dato’ Ajit Singh. (Tan Sri Dato’ is a Malay title. Mr. Ajit Singh was Malaysia’s Ambassador in Vietnam, Austria, Brazil and Germany. He was elected as the first Secretary-General of ASEAN and served from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 1997.)

* * The seventh paragraph of a report “India examining all options: Antony” (January 8, 2009) was “After presiding over the 28th meeting of the board, the apex body which formulates policies for resettlement and welfare of approximately 30 lakh ex-servicemen and their widows, the [Defence] Minister [A.K. Antony] said every year servicemen were retiring at a younger age between 35 and 40 years.” A reader wondered whether this meant that all 30-lakh ex-servicemen are no more. The sentence could have been rephrased as “approximately 30 lakh ex-servicemen and the widows of ex-servicemen”.

* * The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Minister urges overseas Indians to invest in homeland” (January 7, 2009) was “Honour for Service: Minister of State for Statistics G.K. Vasan and Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi with a winner of the community service award at the convention of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin in Chennai on Tuesday”. The caption was incomplete. The award winner is Baroness Shreela Flather of the U.K., a British politician and the first Asian woman to receive a life peerage.

* * The caption of a standalone PTI photograph titled “Snow adventure” (“Newscape” page, January 7, 2009) was “Cool: A young tourist enjoys some amateur skating after fresh snowfall at Manali in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.” A few readers point out that it should have been skiing, as can be seen in the picture. It would be impossible to skate on fresh snow!

* * The fifth paragraph of a report “Judiciary asserts its primacy” (January 5, 2009) was “In the Ghaziabad Provident Fund scam, the CJI permitted the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the allegation that Rs. 15 lakh in cash was deposited at the residence of a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court ….” The Ghaziabad scam and the deposit of Rs.15 lakh in cash are two different cases. The clubbing of the two different incidents was an editing error. The unedited report said “… as in the case of the Ghaziabad PF scam, the CJI permitted a CBI probe into the allegations against a Punjab and Haryana HC judge.”

* * The subheading of a Ranji Trophy semi-final report “Mumbai goes through” (“Sport”, January 8, 2009) incorrectly said “Powar bags five wkts”. It should have been “Powar scalped four”, as in the text and scoreboard.
