Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The District Congress Committee has called on the government for urgent steps to distribute new ration cards to consumers. The committee, which met here on Thursday, said the delay was posing difficulties for the common man in accessing bank loans and other benefits. Addressing the meeting, DCC president V.S. Sivakumar said people were yet to receive ration cards even weeks after Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the distribution of the cards. The meeting decided to lay siege to the Secretariat on January 20 to protest against the government’s lax attitude to the development needs of the capital and various other demands. The DCC also urged the government for immediate measures to implement Central government-funded schemes in a time-bound manner. DCC leaders accused the government of torpedoing the Vizhinjam seaport scheme and the development of the capital region. They said the government had failed to complete the formalities for the establishment of a High Court Bench in the city. Mr. Sivakumar informed the meeting that campaign rallies would be organised by all block congress committees in the district on January 15, 16 and 17.
