Congress mulling fielding Priyanka from Medak

Staff Reporter

Party leaders to meet Sonia Gandhi in February

Bid to rein in KCR who is likely to contest from Medak

DCC chief confident of Congress putting up good show

SANGAREDDY: Congress leaders from Medak district will meet All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi urging her to allow Priyanka Gandhi, granddaughter of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to contest from Medak Lok Sabha seat.

The possibility of fielding Priyanka Gandhi from Medak seat is also being actively considered by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president D. Srinivas.

Disclosing these details here on Thursday, District Congress Committee (DCC) president T. Nandeeswar Goud informed the media that a team of Congress leaders, including Ministers, MPs and MLAs, will meet Sonia Gandhi in the first week of February to present a memorandum in this regard.

According to sources in the Congress, the DCC, with the tacit support of the PCC, made this move in the wake of reports appearing in the media that TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao may contest the Medak Lok Sabha seat, which was so far represented by A. Narendra, currently the president of TRS (N).

Congress leaders are of the opinion that if Ms Priyanka contests the elections it would have an impact in the entire region and the party would be able to check the TRS.

Referring to the proposed grand alliance of the TDP, TRS, CPI and CPI (M), the DCC president said that the Congress could face all these parties singlehandedly and need not worry about the outcome. “The TRS has weakened in the region and that is why it is joining hands with other parties,” he said.
