Birds of peace and kites

Kite flying has begun in a big way. The Hyderabadi skies have started to sport the dazzling colours of kites and of course the ferocity of kite fights.

The annual ritual of kite flying is particularly more intense in parts of old city, where the tradition of kite flying and fighting dates back to the Nizam era.

Amidst the festive spirit of Sankranti and kite flying, one should also spare a thought for the birds of peace, pigeons which succumb to grave injuries after coming in contact with the sharp maanja. The festival of kites becomes a busy month for animal lovers, who keep a tight vigil at various parts of old city to save the lives of pigeons.
