Death anniversary of K.A. Rahman, who took on the toxin-spewing Gwalior Rayons, to be observed MALAPPURAM: K.A. Rahman, the activist who led an agitation against Gwalior Rayons factory at Mavoor, will be honoured by the people of Vazhakkad on his 10th death anniversary on Saturday. A book on him titled ‘K.A. Rahman, the Legendary Leader of the Chaliyar’ will be brought out by the Paristhiti Samrakshana Samiti (PSS). K.T. Vijayamadhavan will release the book at the function to be held at the Government High School, Vazhakkad. A film on Rahman will also be screened on the occasion. Yogendra Parikh, a member of the family of Mahatma Gandhi, will be the chief guest at a public meeting to be held as part of the Chaliyar Day celebrations on Sunday. M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP; MLAs P.K. Abdu Rabb and K. Mohammedunni Haji will participate in the function. Cancer claims lifeRahman died on January 11, 1999, after a prolonged fight against Gwalior Rayons owned by the Birlas. His fight was to save the people of the Chaliyar from environmental dangers posed by the Rayons effluents. Rahman took forward his struggle against the factory carrying a long list of people afflicted by cancer as a result of the toxins let out by Gwalior Rayons factory. Rahman too died of cancer after fighting for the rights of the Chaliyar for many years.
