Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Oommen Chandy has asked the State government to take immediate steps to get rice from West Bengal in the light of its Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s offer to consider Kerala’s requirements to face shortages. In a statement here on Friday, Mr. Chandy said that though West Bengal had surplus rice production, it had not given its share to the Central pool despite requests. Instead, rice was smuggled into Bangladesh. The Centre had to cut the State’s allocation for APL families in the face of shortages. He and Ramesh Chennithala met the Prime Minister and requested him to restore the State’s allocation.
