CET lecturers speak on various aspects at seminar ‘Check site’s history before building house’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Various aspects involved in house construction were delved upon in the seminar ‘Making the Dream Home’ conducted by the Civil Engineering Department of College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) on Saturday. Experts from various CET departments spoke at the one-day seminar which was aimed at imparting useful information to people endeavouring to construct houses. Topics ranged from planning and judicious use of building materials to water conservation. Electrical Department lecturer Francis M. Fernandes spoke about home electrification while N. Asok Kumar, Assistant Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department, spoke on energy efficient heating and vent. Space factorArchitect Manoj Kini of the Department of Architecture, who spoke about planning and designing houses, said that those with a limited budget should not compromise on the area of the house. “Future expansion on a small house with a small foundation is difficult. You can keep the area of the intact and cut the cost by using low-cost building materials, which can later be changed,” he said. Speaking on the topic ‘foundation and soil investigation’ Civil Engineering Department lecturer N. Unnikrishnan said that it was essential to check the geological history of a site before setting off to build a house in it. There were also sessions on basic structural knowledge by Jijy Jacob and on water conservation and rain water harvesting by P.G. Jayaraj of the Civil Engineering Department.
