Bangalore: The truckers’ strike is taking its toll on the loaders, and members of the Karnataka State Hamali Karmikara Sangha have sought the Union Government’s intervention to sort out the matter. On Saturday, they held a protest near the Mysore Bank Circle and shouted slogans against the Union Government for “neglecting the demands of the truck owners and the hamalis”. The truckers’ strike has rendered the loaders jobless, they said, and demanded that the State Government supply foodgrains to them through the public distribution system. “The State has around six lakh loaders. With no work for the past several days, they are facing difficulties,” said K. Mahantesh, State general secretary of the sangha and State committee member of CITU. The loaders are attached to 144 Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Yards, 483 sub-markets of APMC and with thousands of dal, rice and oil mills, textiles mills and warehouses. The Union Government should intervene and sort out the matter through dialogue, he told The Hindu. The loaders have been facing problems for many years in the State and none of the governments have looked into their grievances. The Yeddyurappa Government should announce a special package for the loaders, he said. It should also give compensation to the loaders who were suffering because of the strike, he said. The sangha had decided to intensify its agitation from Monday.
