Artisan credit card for 2 lakh weavers

HYDERABAD: Artisan credit cards to two lakh handloom weavers will be issued shortly. The administrative machinery is being readied for this, according to Minister for Handlooms and Textiles Sabita Indra Reddy.

An official release stated here on Sunday that the Minister assured leaders of Anantapur District Weavers’ United Front K.A.S. Murthy and Dasari Sridhar that the government would convene a meeting of officials to discuss/solve the problems of weavers.

The leaders met her here and submitted a memorandum on weavers’ problems. The memorandum sought employment schemes for 90 per cent of those who were working in non-cooperative sector and passing through a difficult period.

It wanted sanction of Rs. 50,000 loan for each weaver.

The leaders sought withdrawal of cases registered against weavers in 2004 and 2005 and four per cent VAT on zari. They said later in a statement that the Minister ‘positively responded’ to the demands.
