Interested: Visitors at the exhibition of special covers in Mangalore on Sunday.
MANGALORE: A tile factory in the coastal belt, surfaced in the post office on Sunday at the exhibition of special covers by the Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association. The special cover with the cachet of the factory came out in 1980.
Special covers are released to commemorate an event, especially regional events. These covers have a cachet design on the left and a stamp cancellation on the right of the cover. The cancellation and the cachet design are connected to the event. But the stamp may or may not be connected to the event, said Mansoor Hussain, joint secretary of the association.
The displays at the exhibition included special covers released during the inauguration of the post office at Koolur in 2002, during the 11th conference of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists in 1983 and on the occasion of the All India 71st Kannada Literary Conference in Moodbidri in 2003. In addition teher were special covers with cachets of Yakshagana and Bhoota Kola on display.
The exhibition was organised as part of the monthly meeting of the association. At the meeting it was decided that a two-day exhibition would be held next month. The dateshave been tentatively fixed as February 7 and 8. The exhibition would be held to encourage youngsters to step into the world of numismatics and philately.
