CHENNAI: As 18-year-old E.Muthuselvi’s silambam danced to the tune of ‘Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery’ on Saturday, the applause only reinforced the cultural traditions of Tamil Nadu with women of courage and grace.

Inauguration ceremony

The programme marked the inauguration of Chennai Sangamam with the enthusiastic participation of hundreds of artists like Muthuselvi. The inaugural programme, organised at the Centenary Auditorium of the University of Madras, was a lively and creative mix of folk and classical traditions involving 450 artists and technicians.

Directed by Member of Parliament Kanimozhi, the opening programme focussed on the ancient and enduring richness of the River Cauvery passing through the hills (kurinji), forests (mullai), river-fed fertile plains (marutham) and the coast (neythal) of Tamil Nadu.

Performances across the city

The 7-day Chennai Sangamam, an inclusive city festival of performing artists from many disciplines and traditions will have around 4,500 performances across the city.

The parks and beaches in the city are all set to become lively and colourful with various programmes in the six days to come.
