Flower show draws crowds

FLOWER POWER: A large collection of flowers and garden plants exhibited at the Kannur Pushpotsavam in the town on Sunday.

KANNUR: An array of stalls that sell flower and garden plants, a display of a large collection of bonsai and pavilions of institutions such as the Coconut Development Corporation and the Horticultural Corporation are attracting people in large numbers to the Kannur Pushpotsavam being held at the Police Maidan here.

One of the main attractions of the flower show organised by the Kannur District Agri-Horticultural Society is the large bonsai collection. The bonsai trees displayed at the show include many varieties including chiku and mangrove.

Exotic varieties

Flowers, including some exotic varieties, are the cynosure of the show as large number of people visit the kiosks of nurseries from the region and purchase flower plants.

Though rose plant is the most popular variety being sold in large numbers at the flower show, the crowds visiting the stalls also buy other varieties such as dianthus, flox, anthurium, begonia, philosendron, hibiscus and bromellads.

Equally attractive are the stalls selling seeds and plants of vegetables and fruits including chiku, brinjals, amaranthus and, plantains.

There are also stalls by institutions such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Pariyaram Medical College and the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) that provide information on their respective fields.

Planting materials

The stall of the Aralam Farm is a favourite spot to buy quality planting materials.

The stall displays over 10 varieties of coconut and four arecanut varieties. The coconut varieties include Kuttyadi, Yellow Dwarf, Chavakkad Orange Dwarf and Lakshadweep Micro Ordinary. Mango saplings of different varieties are in great demand.

The flower show venue also includes stalls selling terracotta home wares.

Cultural programmes have been organised inside the exhibition venue every evening. Classes and competitions are also being held in connection with the event.
