Welcome measure: The new signages do not carry advertisements. — CHENNAI: As part of its beautification programme, the Chennai Corporation is installing signages throughout the city. The work has already begun with installation of high-arch sign boards on bus route roads showing directions to important locations. Around 50 such boards would be placed in the first phase on Nungambakkam High Road, Arcot Salai, Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy Salai, Dr.Radhakrishnan Salai, Sardar Patel Road and Santhome High Road. The cost of placing these signages is around Rs. 30 lakh. Though existing boards in some locations had advertisements, the civic body is not providing space for advertisements in the new facilities. They would only contain directions or the required information in the standard format. The signages are being designed and placed based on Indian Road Congress standards as regards their height and width. Street names would also get a uniform look as part of the drive. Signages such as ‘U’ turn, School Ahead, One Way, Accident Zone Go Slow, Pedestrian Crossing and Hospital Zone would also be placed. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said: “The consultants have identified nearly 3,000 spots to place the other signages. We have floated tenders. We did not want to have advertisements on the sign boards as the main purpose of signages is lost if they are included.”
