Hubli-Dharwad
Seeking action: Members of Dharwad Jana Jagruti Vedike staging a dharna in front of the Dharwad Railway Station on Sunday. DHARWAD: Several residents of Dharwad, under the aegis of Dharwad Jana Jagruti Vedike, staged a dharna in front of the Dharwad Railway Station here on Sunday seeking extension of the Hubli-Bangalore Intercity Express up to Dharwad. The protesters, led by the president of the vedike and councillor Shivu Hiremath, said that they would be forced to intensify their agitation if steps were not taken to fulfil their demand. They said several memoranda had been submitted to the railway authorities and elected representatives seeking extension of the train service up to Dharwad to reduce inconvenience caused to residents of the city. Residents of Dharwad who travel by the train were facing hardship as there was no connecting train to Hubli from Dharwad at the time of departure and arrival of the intercity express. The residents have to depend on public transport or autorickshaws, they said. Though the railway authorities had assured the residents that the intercity express train would be extended up to Dharwad, it had not been brought into force citing technical reasons, they said. The protesters submitted a memorandum reiterating their demand, addressed to the General Manager of South Western Railway, to railway officers at the Dharwad station.
