PANAJI: A “Maha Sammelan” (congregation) organised by the Akhil Goa Mandir Suraksha Samiti here on Saturday demanded enactment of legislation for protection of temples in the State. Several resolutions were passed at the sammelan of Hindus. The public meet was called by the samiti which has been mobilising Hindu organisations to voice its concern over growing cases of desecration of idols in temples in the State in the last few months. The sammelan, which had the presence of prominent Hindu religious leaders from across the country, condemned the incidents of desecration and vandalism reported in last two years in the State. The samiti has been critical of the State Government’s “inability” to punish the culprits. The sammelan demanded, among others, punitive action against artists as well as advertisers, who distort images of Hindu deities in advertisements to promote various products. It demanded ban on cow slaughter and immediate termination of grants for Haj pilgrims among others.
