Almost all government offices, private concerns, educational institutions, commercial complexes and cinema halls have fire extinguishers. But most of the employees are not trained to use the fire extinguisher. Authorities concerned should impart training to their employees on how to use the fire extinguisher in an emergency situation. They may seek help from fire force authorities for this training. G.N. Devaraj, Bhavanisagar. Widen roadNarayana Street is a major link road that connects the new busstand with Ramakrishna Park. During the former DMK Mayor’s tenure it was decided to develop this road as a small bypass to Four Road. But the proposal has now been abandoned. A lot of vehicles still use this road as Four Road is always crowded. This road is a major road for Cluny Matric Girls School, the leading girl school in Salem with 3,500 students. This road has now a small link road to Brindavan Road also. This 40 feet road has been encroached upon at a corner by huts and illegal constructions for the past few years and authorities have turned a blind eye to repeated representations to have them removed. The corner is near the old Anandamaal Hospital and has a width of just 15 feet, with nearly 25 feet being encroached upon. I request the authorities concerned to clear and widen this road at the earliest. C.V. Ravindranath, Salem. Polio dropsUnion Minister of Health Dr Anbumani Ramadoss has taken pains to clarify the efficacy and the importance of polio drops for our children. The rumours spread faster than virus and deaths of children owing to other reasons have been attributed to the administration of polio drops. Though the government had tackled the situation effectively, the need of the hour is to take strong measures to make the campaign on February 1, the second phase, successful. The administration also should collect details on the deaths of the children and the real cause of the deaths should be given wide publicity to erase erroneous impression in the minds of people. N.P. Ramaswamy, Rasipuram. Police apathyA member of the Salem branch of the Tamil Nadu Medical and Sales Representatives Association lost his motorcycle from a place opposite Gowri Theatre on Omalur Road in Salem city on December 18. When he went to file a complaint in the nearest police station, the men on duty there told him that the theft had not taken place in their jurisdiction and hence directed him to another police station in the city. But to his dismay, his complaint was not accepted by that police station too citing the same reason of jurisdiction. The person who lost the vehicle had to run from pillar to post to file a complaint. Since the vehicle was owned his company, he had to submit a copy of the FIR to his employers. The police conduct in this regard is highly deplorable. If a serious law and order problem arises and any untoward incident happens, to whom should people report if the police cite jurisdictional reasons? This problem needs to be sorted out immediately. K.C. Gopikumar, President, Tamil Nadu Medical and Sales Representatives Association, Salem. Desilting channelThis has reference to the news item ‘Work on desilting channel begins’ (Jan. 6). Those who remember the havoc caused by the devastating flood in 1978 will also remember the preventive measures undertaken in those days against the recurrence of such calamities. The channel got widened and the water flowing through it was free from any pollution. But the condition of this channel is so pathetic that it needs a major operation. Now that the cleansing operation has begun it must be made clear to one and all that serious action will be taken against those who treat this channel as their dumping ground. P.U. Krishnan, Udhagamandalam. Architects of CoimbatoreG. Satyamurty has given an excellent account of men who have moulded Coimbatore. I would like to add the following which have escaped Mr. Satyamurty’s attention. 1. P.S. Govindaswamy Naidu (PSG) may well be called the pioneer in engineering industries and education. Many of the industrialists who nurtured the engineering industry in Coimbatore had begun their life with PSG and later started their own industries. 2. Late T.A. Ramalingam Chettiyar was the first and the only Tamilian to become chairman of Tirupathi Tirumala Devasthanam Board. 3. Late C.S. Rathnasabapathi Mudaliar was responsible for eradication of plague in Coimbatore by relocating the Kumaran Market area, for bringing in Siruvani water to Coimbatore and for the layout by the Municipality of the posh R.S. Puram and Ramnagar areas. Mr. Mudaliar was also the first South Indian to become the president of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi. C.L. Sundar Rajan, Coimbatore.
