Bijapur: Bijapur-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Yuvak Vikas Kendra will celebrate its silver jubilee on January 12. Only three people joined hands and established it in 1984. In all these years, they have taken up awareness programmes, drought relief works, dry land farming and have spread education among rural children. The Kendra has got financial assistance from Hex and Oxfam, NGOs of Switzerland. Kendra director Nandkumar Joshi told The Hindu that Hex and Oxfam had provided financial assistance of Rs. 6.64 crore in the last 25 years. The Samuhika Saksharata Andholana (literacy programme) launched in 1997 was a model programme for other States and districts as the literacy rate went up to 68 per cent from 37 per cent in the district. 55,000 volunteers worked for a year on the programme. The kendra extended its services to Dharwad and Dakshina Kannada districts in 1990 and encouraged poor people to take up non-agricultural activities to earn their livelihood. In 1993, the kendra played a significant role in the construction of 400 houses for people affected by an earthquake at Holisank, Dhulked, Hingani and Umrani villages of Indi taluk in the district. To carry forward its works for the next 25 years, the kendra has launched “Namma Sankalpa” programme under which 12 volunteers will work on 12 projects namely, Nemmadi, Mahile, Souharda, Jeevan Darshan, Arogya, Sambrama, Vidyadaana, Hasiru Usiru, Namma Jala, Karakushala, Sahaya Hasta and Nudi Habba, he said.
