DYFI activist killed in Paravoor

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A DYFI activist was killed in Athani, Paravoor, in the early hours of Sunday, reportedly by goons engaged by a narcotics gang in the area.

Thathapilly Athani unit executive committee member C.R. Ratheesh, 22, died after being admitted to a hospital in the city. Sources said that the incident took place around midnight on Saturday, when Ratheesh and another DYFI activist Sumod arrived at a house of another activist where the goons had struck. On seeing the two youth, the six-member gang attacked them with iron rods and swords. Sumod’s legs were broken in the attack and he has been admitted to the Medical Trust Hospital. Another injured activist, Anoop, has been admitted to a Paravoor hospital.

The gang had come in a jeep. One of them was reportedly in police custody.

Ratheesh’s body was cremated at Paravoor after a post-mortem was conducted at the Alappuzha Medical College. A police team led by P.N. Unniraja, Dy.SP, is camping in the area.

The DYFI had recently formed a new unit and embarked on a campaign against the drugs trade in the area.

The district committee of the DYFI protested against the killing. The committee called upon people to join its attempt to contain the mafia. To spread the message, it will observe Monday as protest day in the district.
