CHIKMAGALUR: R. Narayanaswamy, Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district, has directed officials to ensure that there is no shortage of essential commodities in the district in view of the trucker’s strike. Presiding over a meeting of representatives of the lorry owners’ association, traders and other organisations here on Sunday, Mr. Narayanaswamy called upon traders to cooperate in maintaining the prices of food items at its present level. Stating that there has been no shortage of foodgrains so far, he instructed officials to adopt precautionary measures in this regard. If people come across food shortage in any part of the district, they have been told to inform the control room in the food office, which will be manned round the clock, on Ph: 08262-235261 or the police control room. He told officials of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation to allow transportation of vegetables and other essential items by buses. ‘No shortage’Gangadhar, Deputy Director for Food and Civil Supplies, informed the meeting that 40 per cent of the foodgrains to be distributed under the public distribution system had been lifted from the warehouse in Shimoga. There was no shortage of LPG so far, he added. L.V. Basavaraj, president of the wholesale dealers’ association, said there were sufficient foodgrains in shops. He said there was more demand for sugar and palm oil due to the festival season. Aman, president of the district lorry owners’ association, said lorry owners had cooperated in transporting essential commodities without levying extra charges. M.N. Nagaraj, Superintendent of Police; N. Sundar Naik, Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer; and M.T. Reju, Assistant Commissioner, were present.
