Vegetable sales perk up

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Sale of vegetables picked up at the Koyambedu wholesale market on Sunday after the number of vehicles bringing in essential commodities went up.

“In the past two-three days, only 100 lorries came in. Usually, during this time, we get at least 300 truckloads of vegetables. Compared with last year, when 400 vehicles came in, we got only 200 lorry loads on Sunday,” said S. Chandran, secretary of the Koyambedu Periyar Market 2Licensed Merchants’ Association. Onion, potato, green chilli and brinjal are transported by trucks from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. “On Sunday, only 65-70 vehicles brought in onions. After a week, we saw business return to what it was before the truckers’ strike.”

“Between December 25 and January 10, we get 600 truckloads. Every year, until the Pongal festival, business is good. Though sales picked up on Sunday, prices have not fallen, said V.R. Soundararajan, member of the Koyambedu Market Management Committee.
