TYING THE KNOT: The newly-married couple being felicitated by Russian artistes of Jumbo Circus. KOCHI: Members of the Jumbo Circus, now on in the city, had their moment to relish on Sunday with two of their colleagues getting married at the Pavakkulam Sri Mahadeva Temple, Kaloor, in the presence of a large number of well-wishers and friends. Rahul Dewan Rai and Geetha Lama, both 25, tied the knot at a brief ceremony that started at 8 a.m. A reception was organised at the Jumbo Circus auditorium between 9.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Russian circus artistes greeted the newly-married couple at the reception. Mr. Rai is a Nepali, now settled in Darjeeling and is a star performer for Jumbo Circus. He is a specialist in the African Fire Dance. His father, Munna Dewan Rai was present at the wedding and the reception that followed. The other family members present included his sisters Soni, Moni and Puthal, all of them artistes in the Jumbo Circus. The sisters perform Flying Trapeze and the Japanese Doll Act. Ms. Lama is a Nepali and has been with the Jumbo Circus for the last eight years. She is a versatile artiste and performs American Ring of Death, Statue Acrobat, Dental Act, Japanese Doll Act, Elephant Girl Act and Hippopotamus Act. Her mother, brother and sisters were also present for the wedding and the reception. Ms. Lama’s elder sister also works with the Jumbo Circus as a Saree Acrobat. Her brother Raju is an artiste who performs the Russian Stick Balance Act. Though brief, the marriage ceremony took the hues of Kerala culture, with the groom wearing a dhothi. Srihari Nair, medical relations officer said that the management of the Jumbo Circus felt that since the couple were in love for a long time they should get married here in God’s Own Country. He said that it is not often that artistes get married within the circus.
