TIRUVARUR: Uzhavar Sandhais have been introduced by the Government to provide direct marketing facility to farmers who produce horticulture crops, said U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, at Needamangalam in the district on Monday. He inaugurated the 108th uzhavar sandhai at Needamangalam and distributed identity cards to 43 farmers for selling vegetables in the market. “Thirty farmers have brought 5,620 kg of vegetables of 51 varieties to the market on Monday. The total worth of the vegetables brought to the market is Rs.84,920,” the Minister said. Collector M. Chandrasekaran said that uzhavar sandhais had twin objectives, one is to provide direct marketing to farmers and other is to provide fresh vegetables to consumers. Other vegetable traders should not consider uzhavar sandhai as a hindrance. People should patronise uzhavar sandhais. Electronic weighing machine has been provided at the market. Free bus pass has been given to farmers to transport vegetables, the Collector said. The market has come up at a cost of Rs.22.75 lakh.
