Most of the amount will be spent on augmenting civic amenities in slums Civic bodies asked to focus on sanitation, says Mayor Kakinada: The State Government has sanctioned Rs 13 crores to the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) for taking up infrastructure development works in low-lying areas of the town in a phased manner. A sum of Rs 4 crores has already been released and the municipal council has paved the way for execution of the proposed works by passing a resolution. Almost the entire sum will be spent on augmenting civic amenities in slum areas spread around the city, said Kakinada Mayor K Saroja. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Ms. Saroja said the KMC was asked to spend the money that remains after making the provision for payment of electricity bills for six months, which accounts for Rs 78 lakhs (Rs 13 lakh per month), to ensure that it does not become a defaulter on that count. At the meeting of mayors and municipal chairpersons held at Hyderabad recently, Ms. Saroja made a PowerPoint presentation wherein she submitted proposals for laying new pipelines and purchasing machinery to streamline drinking water supply at an estimated cost of Rs 108 crores. KMC is seeking financial assistance for these works under the Urban Infrastructure Development for Small and Medium Towns scheme. Another major project which is sought to be funded by the Government is the construction of 3,120 houses under Integrated Housing Development Project at Jagannaickpur. Ms. Saroja said KMC and other civic bodies were asked to focus on sanitation, bank linkages for self-help groups, disbursements of pensions and improving the infrastructure facilities in general. The housing project taken up by KMC was acknowledged by the Principal Secretary for Municipal Administration, Pushpa Subramaniam, as a model for others. Deputy Mayor A Srinivasa Rao and corporator K Ramesh were present.
