No nomination papers filed on day one

BJD, BJP not to have an alliance for civic polls

CEC appoints financial experts to oversee financial expenditure of each candidate

New voters list released

CUTTACK: At least 98 sets of nomination papers were sold on Monday but not a single candidate filed papers on the day for the February 6 Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) polls. Filing of nomination papers began on the day and the last day is fixed on Friday.

According to sources, only Independent candidates procured nomination papers on the day one as major political parties have not yet finalised their list of official candidates. While BJD on Monday conducted an interview of the prospective party candidates in Bhubaneswar, BJP was busy formulating a committee to select party candidates. Both the parties are expected to announce first phase of candidates by Tuesday evening.

Bickering

As BJD and BJP have decided not to have alliance for the CMC polls, the leaders of the parties are busy picking up their respective candidates for all 54 wards of the CMC.

The opposition Congress party is also determined to wrest the CMC council this time and putting aside their internal bickering, all factions of the party have joined hands to pick up only winnable candidates for the polls.

“We would field only popular party workers as our candidates for the polls ensuring that no rebel candidate fights from any seat”, said senior party leader Prasad Harichandan, who is in charge of Cuttack polls.

Experts believe that if Congress takes care of its rebel candidates, then the party has every possible to wrest CMC council.

Meanwhile, the district administration is also getting ready to conduct the civic polls peacefully.

ADM U. N. Naik, who is appointed as election officer for the civic polls is overseeing the entire poll process at Vikash Bhawan while at least 10 officials are assisting him.

On Monday the State Election Commissioner (SEC) appointed four financial experts for the pools who would have a look at the financial expenditure of each candidate.

The district administration has in the meantime released the new voters’ list for the civic polls.

A total of 3,64,564 voters of the city would exercise their franchise in next month’s civic polls.
